Naming the thing: why Angel CTO exists
A startup rarely fails because the code was wrong. It fails because the wrong thing got built, too slowly, with the runway that was left. Here is what an Angel CTO actually does about that.
A founder messaged me at 2am once, certain the business was about to die over a bug. It was a real bug. It was not the thing that was going to kill the company.
The thing that was going to kill the company was a quarter spent polishing a feature nobody had asked to pay for, while the runway burned. The bug was loud. The constraint was quiet.
The one job
An Angel CTO has one job: make sure the business does not fail for technical reasons. Not “advise on technology”. Not “build the MVP”. Make sure the technical decisions preserve runway instead of burning it.
That distinction matters, because most technical effort in an early company is spent on the wrong constraint:
- Rewriting something that worked, because it was not elegant.
- Scaling for a load that does not exist yet.
- Shipping a feature that demos well and sells nothing.
The Theory of Constraints applied without sentiment: find the one thing blocking forward motion, and remove it. Everything else can wait.
What that looks like in practice
When the founder messaged me about the bug, the honest answer was the one they did not want to hear:
The bug costs us a handful of support emails a week.
The missing sales page costs us every visitor who leaves undecided.
Fix the page first. The bug can wait until Thursday.
The thousand dollars earmarked for the bug went to a sales campaign instead. The campaign paid for the next two months. The bug got fixed on the Thursday, calmly, by someone who was not panicking.
Skin in the game
This is not consulting. An Angel CTO holds equity, which means the incentive is aligned with survival, not with billable hours. Same destination. Same risk.
